“I didn’t read books by Dominican authors until I was in my 20s, and it’s a shame because I feel that if I had read books with characters I could identify with, I would have felt affirmed and validated in this world. With 'Lil Dominican readers we hope to create a similar impact in the lives of your child. May this collection of books inspire them to continue reading our stories.” - Angela Abreu, Founder & Creative Director of Dominican Writers Association

This holiday season, Dominican Writers Association and oneKIN are teaming again to share the rich stories and diverse voices of both traditionally-published and indie Dominican-American authors. For the holidays only, you can gift your little loved ones the super-sized version of our curated Dominican literary gift boxes for Children, Super Lit 'Lil Dominican Readers.

The Super Lit Holiday Kids Boxes will include a total of 8 titles! This includes the full 4-book Tia Lola Collection by Julia Alvarez plus 4 titles randomly selected from the curated list of books below:

    • Anacaona, by Viviana Torres (Bilingual) - Anacaona was a Taina, a native from Quisqueya, the island that today is comprised of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. She made a powerful stand against the Spanish invaders, for which she lost her life. The inspiring story of this courageous native woman is meant to inspire children to be brave too.

    • Ana Maria does not Live in a Castle, by Hilda Eunice Burgos -

Her last name may mean kings, but Ana María Reyes REALLY does not live in a castle. Rather, she's stuck in a tiny apartment with two parents (way too lovey-dovey), three sisters (way too dramatic), everyone's friends (way too often), and a piano (which she never gets to practice). But some new friends and honest conversations help her figure out what truly matters, and know that she can succeed no matter what. Ana María Reyes may not be royal, but she's certain to come out on top.

    • Camila & the Rain, by Clara Torres-JamisonCamila & The Rain is a story about a little girl who learns that through independent thinking, self-awareness, imagination, thinking outside the box, and resiliency any rainy day is a fun day, and encourage others to spend time with one another, play together, and have fun!
    • El Cuco/El Boogeyman, by Elizabeth Balaguer (Bilingual) - This story is for children to know the legend of "Cuco" and at the same time become familiar with the mythical character without feeling any fright, on the contrary, to be friend with "Cuco".
    • Ghost Squad, by Claribel Ortega - Shortly before Halloween, Lucely and her best friend, Syd, cast a spell that accidentally awakens malicious spirits, wreaking havoc throughout St. Augustine. Together, they must join forces with Syd's witch grandmother, Babette, and her tubby tabby, Chunk, to fight the haunting head-on and reverse the curse to save the town and Lucely's firefly spirits before it's too late.
    • Greña/Crazy Hair,  by Kianny N. Antigua (Bilingual)- An endearing story about a young girl and her curly hair. Greña / Crazy Hair is a short yet empowering, bilingual, children's book that addresses multiple themes of self-esteem and family love for parents and children to enjoy. The energetic, curly haired girl, Kiara, teaches us how beautiful, strong, enigmatic and free her hair is, as she demonstrates its beauty and uniqueness through various positive activities.
    • If Dominican were a Color, by Sili Recio - The palette of the Dominican Republic is exuberant and unlimited. Maiz comes up amarillo, the blue-black of dreams washes over sandy shores, and people’s skin can be the shade of cinnamon in cocoa or of mahogany. This exuberantly colorful, softly rhyming picture book is a gentle reminder that a nation’s hues are as wide as nature itself.
    • Islandborn, by Junot DiazEvery kid in Lola's school was from somewhere else. So when Lola's teacher asks the students to draw a picture of where their families immigrated from, all the kids are excited. Except Lola. She can't remember The Island—she left when she was just a baby. But with the help of her family and friends, and their memories—joyous, fantastical, heartbreaking, and frightening—Lola's imagination takes her on an extraordinary journey back to The Island.
    • Luna, Yes!/!Luna, Sí!, by Jessica Gonzalez (Bililngual) - While the world may not understand Luna, her sister Cassie knows her better than anyone. They may not be able to share secrets like some siblings, but they share something far more important-- a sister bond. Luna, Yes!/!Luna, Sí! is a bilingual story about Cassie and Luna's loving, and sometimes challenging, sibling relationship. Cassie's narration and Luna's responses highlight some behaviors that can be typical for people with high needs on the autism spectrum.

    • Snowy Day, by Anabel Soto - Meet Ari, a brave and inquisitive little girl who loves learning, loves teaching and loves adventure.
